Violent demonstrations engulfed Ethiopia following the murder of popular Oromo singer Haacaaluu Hundeessaa. He was shot dead by a targeted killer in Addis Ababa on Monday night, fuelling ethnic tensions threatening the country’s fragile peace since the coming of Premier Abiy in 2018.
In June 2019, 3 Generals and Governor of the Amhara region were the victims of such targeted killing. August 2018 Simegnew Bekele, the project manager and chief engineer of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam was murdered in plain daylight.
The singer’s death led to over two hundred are killed thousands wounded. Many commercial centers and private residence has been torched in Oromia regions.
Protesters have pulled down a statue of a royal prince – Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael – who was the father of Haile Selassie, Ethiopia’s last emperor in the city of Harar.
Ethiopian authorities shut down internet access throughout the country, amid protests. Federal police raided the offices of the Oromia Media Network and Asrat Media.
Many Opposition leaders are jailed with impunity. Political opposition leaders such as Eskinder Nega, Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba, Eng. Yelekal Getenet, & Ledetu Ayalew with 40 others have been detained.
